Karuna Reiki

An advanced energy healing system developed in 1995 that emphasizes compassionate action and uses eight specific symbols to address deep emotional and karmic patterns.

What is Karuna Reiki?

Karuna Reiki is an advanced energy healing system that evolved from Usui Reiki in the mid-1990s. Karuna is a Sanskrit word used in Hinduism, Buddhism and Zen, translated to mean any action taken to diminish the suffering of others or compassionate action. Karuna Reiki had 8 symbols channeled by various practitioners, each designed to address specific healing needs ranging from past-life trauma to emotional blockages. Unlike traditional Usui Reiki, which works primarily with universal life force energy, Karuna Reiki practitioners report a more focused, penetrating quality to the energy that works at deeper karmic and cellular levels. The system requires prior Usui Reiki Master training and represents an expansion rather than a replacement of foundational Reiki practice.

Origins & Lineage

In 1995, with the help of some of his students, William Lee Rand developed the Karuna Reiki® system of healing. Rand, founder of the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) and a Reiki Master since March 1989, was approached by students who had encountered symbols not found in traditional Usui Reiki teachings. The symbols were channeled by several other Reiki masters, including Marcy Miller, Mellie-Ray Marine, Pat Courtney, Catherine Mills Bellamount and Marla Abraham. William contacted some of his best students, especially those who were clairvoyant and sensitive to healing energy, and asked them to meet with him over a weekend to experiment with new Reiki symbols. When they met, William prayed for guidance and asked that they be shown how to create a class to teach the new symbols. Between the winter of 1993 and 1995, a new style of Reiki was created called Karuna Reiki®.

The development period spanned 1993-1995, during which Rand and his students refined both the symbols and the attunement process. Rand trademarked the name Karuna Reiki® to maintain teaching standards and consistency in transmission. In 2014, the system was further upgraded when Rand introduced Holy Fire® Reiki, which became integrated with Karuna Reiki to create Holy Fire® Karuna Reiki®.

How It’s Practiced

Karuna Reiki is practiced as an extension of Usui Reiki, typically accessible only to those who have completed Usui Reiki Master level training. A Karuna Reiki session resembles traditional Reiki—the recipient lies clothed on a massage table while the practitioner places hands on or above the body—but incorporates eight specific symbols with distinct purposes. These symbols include Zonar (for past-life healing), Halu (for dissolving illusions), Harth (for heart-centered healing), Rama (for grounding), Gnosa (for spiritual connection), Kriya (for manifestation), Iava (for clearing negative patterns), and Shanti (for peace). Practitioners are attuned to these symbols through a formal initiation process led by a licensed Karuna Reiki Master Teacher.

The symbols may be drawn in the air, visualized, or traced on the body during treatment. Practitioners often chant the symbol names to activate their specific frequencies. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes and may be combined with traditional Usui Reiki symbols. The energy is reported to work more intensively on karmic patterns, childhood trauma, and shadow material than standard Reiki, often bringing emotional release or clarity to long-standing issues.

Karuna Reiki Today

Karuna Reiki remains primarily taught through the International Center for Reiki Training and its network of licensed teachers worldwide. To become a certified Karuna Reiki Master Teacher, students must complete training through ICRT-authorized instructors. Classes are offered both in-person and online, typically as intensive weekend workshops. The prerequisite remains Usui Reiki Master certification, usually with a minimum of six months practice experience.

The system has evolved with the introduction of Holy Fire® energy in 2014, and subsequent upgrades to Holy Fire® II (2015) and Holy Fire® III (2018). Modern classes now refer to attunements as “placements” (for Level I & II) and “ignitions” (for Master level), reflecting shifts in how the energy is transmitted. Karuna Reiki is encountered at Reiki conferences, holistic health centers, and retreat centers, particularly in North America and Europe. The practice maintains a structured lineage system, with all certified practitioners able to trace their training back to William Lee Rand through their teachers.

Common Misconceptions

Karuna Reiki is not a separate healing modality independent of Usui Reiki—it is explicitly an advanced extension requiring Usui Reiki Master training as a foundation. It is not an ancient practice; despite the Sanskrit etymology of “karuna,” the system itself was created in the 1990s in the United States. The symbols used in Karuna Reiki, while some may have appeared in other contexts, were channeled by modern practitioners rather than inherited from historical traditions.

Karuna Reiki is also not a cure-all or substitute for medical treatment. While practitioners report significant shifts in emotional and energetic patterns, it remains a complementary healing approach. The trademarked name Karuna Reiki® refers specifically to the system taught by ICRT; other systems such as Karuna Ki use similar symbols but have different attunement processes and are legally distinct practices. Not everyone who completes Karuna Reiki training becomes a teacher—additional Master Teacher certification is required.

How to Begin

To learn Karuna Reiki, first complete Usui Reiki training through Master level, ideally with at least six months of active practice. Research ICRT-licensed Karuna Reiki Master Teachers in your area or consider online training options through the International Center for Reiki Training’s website at reiki.org. The standard learning path involves a Karuna Reiki Master course, typically taught over a weekend, which includes instruction in the eight symbols, attunement (or “ignition”) to the Karuna energy, and practice sessions.

William Lee Rand’s books, particularly “Reiki: The Healing Touch” and articles in Reiki News Magazine, provide foundational context, though hands-on training with a licensed teacher is required for attunement. Attend Reiki conferences or retreats where Karuna Reiki is featured to experience the energy and meet practitioners. Begin with a clear understanding that Karuna Reiki is an advanced practice rooted in compassionate action—the intention to diminish suffering in oneself and others—and requires commitment to ongoing personal healing work alongside technical skill development.
