Koshi Chimes

Handcrafted musical wind chimes created in France, tuned to four elemental scales and widely used in sound healing, meditation, and therapeutic settings.

What are Koshi Chimes?

Koshi chimes are authentic musical instruments of high quality, deep in sound, rich in overtones and with long resonance. Unlike mass-produced wind chimes, each Koshi chime is a precision-tuned instrument consisting of a bamboo veneer resonance tube containing eight thin steel rods welded to a metal plate at the base and meticulously tuned to produce eight notes. The four tunings are inspired by the elements: Terra (Earth), Aqua (Water), Aria (Air), and Ignis (Fire). When activated by wind or gentle hand movement, the suspended clapper strikes the rods, creating what the inventor describes as a “circular” sound, as the notes seem to build and fade. The harmonic structure allows overtones of shorter chords to gradually dominate and become fundamentals, producing layered, meditative soundscapes.

Origins & Lineage

Kabir, a lover of sound and the inventor of the original Shanti chimes, developed the Koshi chimes in 2009. Kabir, a musician, invented the Shanti chime and recorded its sounds in 1992. After 17 years, the Shanti had gained much recognition in the world music sphere. The creator of Koshi chimes actually worked at the company that made Shanti chimes for several years before he created his brand of chimes in 2010. (Production officially began in 2010; the design was finalized in 2009.) Kabir designed the Koshi chimes slightly larger, with bamboo veneer rather than metal-only shells. While the Shanti had five different tunings, the Koshi would have only four. Shanti production stopped in 2009, and Kabir’s workshop picked up production of Koshi chimes in 2010.

Kabir lives in Le Soler, France, a commune located at the base of the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France. Genuine Koshi Chimes are handcrafted in France in a workshop at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. Kabir explains: “I have used bamboo veneer as it is much stronger than natural bamboo. A true ‘resonance tube’ of high acoustic quality is made with thin layers of bamboo. This and a new tuning technique that I developed give the sound even more depth and enrich the harmonics”. The name ‘Koshi’ was created by the maker himself, playing with sounds of vowels and consonants. In Japanese, ‘Koshi’ translates to ‘ancient poetry’.

How It’s Practiced

Koshi chimes are activated in two primary ways: by wind outdoors or by gentle hand movement indoors. Koshi Chimes are played by holding the string and gently swaying the chime around to activate the metal rods. Sound healers and meditation facilitators often hold a chime by its cord and rotate it in slow circles, allowing the clapper to strike the internal rods in varying patterns. Each chime is precision-tuned to create rich melodies, with layered overtones and long-lasting resonance. The four elemental tunings can be played individually or in combination; all four chimes are harmonically compatible and can sound simultaneously without dissonance.

In therapeutic contexts, practitioners use Koshi chimes to mark transitions between phases of a session, to clear energetic space, or to guide clients into deeper states of relaxation. Appreciated by musicians, they are often used in musical compositions. The chimes are also hung in healing spaces, yoga studios, and private homes where they respond to ambient air movement, creating spontaneous soundscapes.

Koshi Chimes Today

The soothing melodies of Koshi Chimes are loved by sound healing therapists, yoga studios, and meditation spaces. Since 2010, Koshi chimes have become a standard instrument in the global sound healing community, appearing in sound baths, restorative yoga classes, Reiki sessions, and mindfulness retreats. At some healing centers, Koshi chimes are optional instruments for sound healing, their use dependent on the energetic needs and preferences of each client.

Authentic Koshi chimes are distributed worldwide but are exclusively manufactured in the original French workshop. Genuine chimes carry an ‘Origine France Garantie number’ on the box. The market has seen a proliferation of imitations, leading practitioners to verify authenticity through authorized retailers. Koshi chimes are available individually or in sets of four elements, often displayed on custom wooden stands in professional settings.

Common Misconceptions

Koshi chimes are not ancient instruments, despite marketing language that sometimes suggests deep historical lineage. They are a contemporary invention from 2009–2010, inspired by the Shanti chime lineage (itself dating to 1992). While chimes and bells have been used in spiritual contexts for millennia across Asian traditions, the Koshi chime specifically is a modern French creation.

Koshi chimes are not outdoor instruments. While these chimes can be used outdoors, the makers typically do not recommend it. Neither brand makes the chimes to be able to withstand long-term exposure to the elements. Arid conditions can cause the chimes to crack, while humid environments can cause them to mold.

The elemental associations (Terra, Aqua, Aria, Ignis) are not based on ancient cosmological systems but on the interpretation of the chime makers. The connection to the classical four elements is symbolic and aesthetic rather than rooted in a specific philosophical or spiritual tradition.

How to Begin

To experience Koshi chimes, visit a local sound healing practitioner, yoga studio, or wellness center where they are commonly used. Many practitioners offer sound bath sessions where Koshi chimes feature alongside Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and other instruments. To explore Koshi chimes for personal use, purchase from an authorized dealer to ensure authenticity—look for the Origine France Garantie certification.

Begin with a single chime in the tuning that resonates with you; many retailers provide audio samples of each elemental scale. Hold the chime by its cord and experiment with gentle rotational movements, listening to how the sound changes with speed and angle. Alternatively, hang the chime in a location with occasional air movement and allow it to play spontaneously. Practitioners recommend sitting quietly with the chime for five to ten minutes, focusing attention on the overtones and the way sound moves through space. For those interested in incorporating Koshi chimes into sound healing practice, consider training with established sound therapy schools or exploring resources on vibrational healing modalities.
